How to keep snakes away
To keep snakes off of your property and out of your home, take these steps:
-
Reduce rodent populations. Clean up pet food, sweep under and eliminate bird feeders, and store bird seed and other food sources in sealed containers.
-
Limit basking areas. Remove rocks, shrubs, boards, and debris. Snakes like to sun themselves on rocks – but rodents also favor these types of habitats, and eliminating them will likely lead the rodents and the snakes to pursue other living spaces.
-
Mow your lawn often. Snakes are more likely to avoid short-cut grass because it increases their exposure to predators.
-
Limit watering your lawn. Watering your lawn and garden is more likely to attact worms, slugs, frogs and other species, which in turn may attract snakes searching for prey.
-
Install a perch pole. Attract natural predators of snakes like hawks and owls by placing poles in open areas with good views of your yard and surrounding areas.
