How to keep chipmunks out of my house
Chipmunks that enter homes seldom cause significant problems, but they are a nuisance.
Remove Attractants — Don’t store bird seed, flower or vegetable seeds, dry pet food or other potential food sources in open containers or paper or plastic bags. Seal them in plastic or metal tubs or boxes.
Prevent Access — Using hardware cloth with a ¼-inch mesh as well as materials such as copper mesh (e.g., Copper Stuf Fit™) or stainless steel mesh (e.g., Xcluder™), close all openings where chipmunks or other rodents might gain entry.
Eliminate cover — Do not stack firewood near your home, garage, shed, patio or deck to deter burrowing activity near the foundation or under these structures. Minimize or eliminate landscape plantings near your foundation, patio, or deck.
Laws and regulations to be aware of
While we attempt to provide guidance about state and federal regulations pertaining to specific species and control techniques, we do not provide information about local jurisdictions (city, town, county, etc.) where regulations may be more restrictive, especially as it applies to discharge of firearms, transport of animals or use of trapping equipment. Contact your local city or county government to inquire further. No guarantee is made that information (or lack of information) associated with a species or control technique is completely accurate or current. You should become familiar with federal, state and local laws before beginning any wildlife control activities. |
