Should I be concerned about snakes in my yard?
If you live in a wooded area, snakes are probably on your property because there are plenty of resources available to them. They seek out large flat rocks to sun on, and pursue mice, voles, frogs, spiders and slugs for meals. Leaves and branches provide cover.
Remember that what may not appear to be a ‘wooded area’ to you may very much appear ‘wooded’ to small animals. A few trees with leaf litter is often enough to attract ‘forest’ wildlife.
If you want to reduce wildlife on your property, raking leaves and creating barriers, such as separating lawn and wooded area with stones and gravel may be effective deterrents.
Laws and regulations to be aware of
While we attempt to provide guidance about state and federal regulations pertaining to specific species and control techniques, we do not provide information about local jurisdictions (city, town, county, etc.) where regulations may be more restrictive, especially as it applies to discharge of firearms, transport of animals or use of trapping equipment. Contact your local city or county government to inquire further. No guarantee is made that information (or lack of information) associated with a species or control technique is completely accurate or current. You should become familiar with federal, state and local laws before beginning any wildlife control activities. |
