How to keep snakes away

To keep snakes off of your property and out of your home, take these steps:

  • Reduce rodent populations. Clean up pet food, sweep under and eliminate bird feeders, and store bird seed and other food sources in sealed containers.

  • Limit basking areas. Remove rocks, shrubs, boards, and debris. Snakes like to sun themselves on rocks – but rodents also favor these types of habitats, and eliminating them will likely lead the rodents and the snakes to pursue other living spaces.

  • Mow your lawn often. Snakes are more likely to avoid short-cut grass because it increases their exposure to predators.

  • Limit watering your lawn. Watering your lawn and garden is more likely to attact worms, slugs, frogs and other species, which in turn may attract snakes searching for prey.

  • Install a perch pole. Attract natural predators of snakes like hawks and owls by placing poles in open areas with good views of your yard and surrounding areas.

Laws and regulations to be aware of

While we attempt to provide guidance about state and federal regulations pertaining to specific species and control techniques, we do not provide information about local jurisdictions (city, town, county, etc.) where regulations may be more restrictive, especially as it applies to discharge of firearms, transport of animals or use of trapping equipment. Contact your local city or county government to inquire further. No guarantee is made that information (or lack of information) associated with a species or control technique is completely accurate or current. You should become familiar with federal, state and local laws before beginning any wildlife control activities.
